Prap vs Snagit

Snagit is the classic screenshot tool for work, and it's very good. Prap covers the same ground for free on Windows — and adds a few things Snagit can't do.

Where Snagit is better

  • Snagit runs on Mac as well as Windows; Prap is Windows only for now.
  • Snagit has more than fifteen years of polish, many templates and a large library of tutorials.
  • Companies that already standardise on TechSmith tools get central licensing and support.

Where Prap is better

  • Prap is free — no subscription, trial or watermark.
  • Rewind saves what just happened on screen, even if you weren't recording.
  • Hold the mouse still anywhere to capture — no shortcut to remember.
  • Bug reports, meeting notes and guides are built in, and private details are hidden by default.

Switching from Snagit

Prap opens your .snagx files, so your old captures come with you. Install Prap, open a .snagx from the library (Import Snagit library…), and keep working.

Questions

Is Prap really a free Snagit alternative?

Yes. Every feature in Prap is free — screenshots, scrolling capture, recording, guides, links. There's no trial and no watermark.

Can Prap open Snagit files?

Yes. Prap imports .snagx files (with their annotations) and can save captures as .snagx too.

Does Prap work on Mac?

Not yet. Prap is for Windows 10 and 11. If you need the same tool on Mac and Windows today, Snagit covers both.
